Hiv/ Aids Screening
HIV stands for human immunodeficiency virus. If left untreated, HIV can lead to the disease AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome).
Unlike some other viruses, the human body can’t get rid of HIV completely. So once
you have HIV, you have it for life
HIV attacks the body’s immune system, specifically the CD4 cells (T cells), which
help the immune system fight off infections. If left untreated, HIV reduces the
number of CD4 cells (T cells) in the body, making the person more likely to get
infections or infection-related cancers. Over time, HIV can destroy so many of
these cells that the body can’t fight off infections and disease.
HIV continues to be a major global public health issue. Since 2000, 38.1 million
people have become infected with HIV and 25.3 million people have died of AIDSrelated.

Steps to prevent spreading HIV
If you are HIV-positive (infected with HIV) or have engaged in sex or needle-sharing
with someone who could be infected with HIV, take precautions to prevent
spreading the infection to others.
- Take antiretroviral medicines. Getting treated for HIV can help prevent the spread of HIV to people who are not infected.
- Tell your sex partner or partners about your behavior and whether you are HIV-positive.
- Do not share personal items, such as toothbrushes, razors, or sex toys, that may be contaminated with blood, semen, or vaginal fluids.
- Do not donate blood, plasma, semen, body organs, or body tissues.
- Follow safer sex practices, such as using condoms.
